Tacos and horses are two of my favorite things (as much as I talk about things I don’t like my list of favorite things is rather substantial). It just so happens that this year, main events with both of them fall on the same day.
That’s right, get out your Mint Queso Margajuleps, the Kentucky Derby & Cinco de Mayo are on the same day.
Now I don’t care for white people turning other culture’s events into drinking holidays, just look how white people ruined the Irish’s St. Patrick’s Day and turned it into a drinking infused romp.
But Cinco de Mayo has tacos!
TACOS.
And we all know tacos are something even white people can’t ruin...no matter how hard they might try.
As far as horses, I’ve been watching the Kentucky Derby (and horse racing’s subsequent Triple Crown) since as long as I can remember. At nine years old when most kids were worried about cooties I was worried about Gary Stevens coming down the home stretch on Victory Gallop and beating out Real Quiet (Spoiler Alert: Real Quiet beat him in both the Derby and the Preakness but lost the Belmont by a nose).
In short, the first Saturday in May is always a special one. It means pie, fancy hats, and the run for the roses. This time it also means I get to add tacos to the crowd.
So there you have it, they said don’t mix work & pleasure, but they never said anything about tacos & horses.
